The members of Three Days Grace began bashing punk chords when they were in their teens, carving a derivative yet energetic sound that fueled their live performances.

Three Days Grace was formed in Norwood, Ontario, Canada, in 1997 by Adam Gontier (vocals, guitar), Brad Walst (bass), and Neil Sanderson (drums). The group was originally called Groundswell, a five-piece that lasted from 1992 until transforming to a trio five years later. Gontier and Walst were raised in Norwood, and many of their songs were inspired by living in a place with a population of around 1,500. The bandmembers were still in high school when they had their first gig, and they performed anywhere that would accept them -- including opening for a movie.

Three Days Grace eventually relocated to Toronto and were introduced to producer Gavin Brown by their old manager. The band gave Brown a private set, and he selected what he felt were the most promising tracks. The group then produced a demo for EMI Music Publishing Canada. With Brown at the helm, Three Days Grace recorded "(I Hate) Everything About You." The tune got them a publishing deal with EMI, and they soon were signed to Jive after being courted by the company's president. Brown and Three Days Grace were sent to a studio in Boston, MA, to start the group's debut album. The band completed its self-titled full-length in Woodstock, NY, at an isolated location free from big-city distractions. Heavily influenced by Kyuss and Sunny Day Real Estate, the dark, angst-ridden tales of small-town love and hate on Three Days Grace brought the group a Next Big Thing tag.

Three Days Grace was released on July 22, 2003, by which time "(I Hate) Everything About You" was already hit on alternative radio stations in Canada. The band toured extensively behind the record for the next two years as both a support act and headliners, but after a while, life on the road left the band, especially Gontier, feeling isolated and alone. Consequently, this theme of disconnection -- coupled with the realization that one was in fact not alone -- would serve as the basis for their follow-up album. Getting back to their roots by writing the record in the Ontario countryside, One-X was released in June 2006. The album, which hit number five on the Billboard Top 200, marked the recorded debut of the band's second guitarist, Barry Stock. On One-X, the follow up to Three Days Grace's 2003 self-titled debut, the band explores that sentiment with alarming honesty. A raw, confessional album, One-X finds frontman Adam Gontier delving into a sense of utter loneliness that ironically comes from being constantly surrounded by other people. One-X is simultaneously the story of Gontier's personal destruction on the road, and a universal tale of feeling like an outsider.
"From front to back, the lyrics of One-X explore the different problems I had. I felt singled out. I wanted to be normal and I just wanted someone, anyone to help me. At a point, I finally came to realize that no matter how singled out I felt, there were so many others out there like me. I realized, 'okay, I'm not alone'." - Adam Gontier
Part of learning he was not alone came from learning his band mates felt similarly isolated, dismayed with the falseness of life on the road.
"Being on tour can be strange sometimes," said bassist Brad Walst. "All these people around you seem to know you, but they really don't and you don't know them either, but you carry on as if you do. It's weird how you can still feel alone in a crowd of people. In fact the only ones we could really relate to were the true fans. They know what's going on inside your head because they are the ones that are hearing it in your music."
After two years on the road, the band was coming to terms with what they experienced. "The whole process tuned us into the phenomenon of urban isolation - being in a big city, where people are inches away, but you feel miles apart" said drummer Neil Sanderson. "We're used to the opposite, being from rural Ontario, where you're miles away physically, but you feel inches apart."
Oddly enough, the band escaped by isolating themselves again. Packing up, getting out of the city and moving into Ontario cottage country, the band eliminated all outside distractions to write One-X. "We basically wrote the record around a fire with acoustic guitars," said Walst. "It was all about getting back to our roots."
When the band emerged, they had a heavy, highly emotional album in hand. One-X is rife with anguish-fueled vocals, heavy beats and rough chords. Backed by the thunderous rhythm section of Neil Sanderson on drums and Brad Walst on bass, and the thrashing, urgent riffs of Barry Stock on guitar, One-X is a roller coaster ride through Gontier's psyche. Intensely honest, Gontier leaves nothing out; it sounds as if he's ripping pages from his journal.
"Pain" finds Gontier stubbornly adhering to the vices that hurt him, while letting in the voice trying to heal him. The almost sweetly melodic verses come from "someone telling me there's something wrong and you have to do something about it," says Gontier, while the grizzled choruses find him clinging to the pain.
"Animal I Have Become," the first single off One-X, is Adam's "realization that a change has to happen and you have to ask for help." With stomping bass lines backing him up, Gontier pleads, "Somebody get me through this nightmare / I can't control myself." It's also startlingly open, as he realizes the impact of revealing his lyrics: "So what if you can see / the darkest side of me."
"The road definitely got the better of us at times," said Sanderson, echoing the sentiment of "Animal I Have Become." "I know from my own point of view that you can kind of lose yourself out there and get caught up in the moment. It's just the lifestyle. I know Adam went through times when he would do anything to distance himself from the strangers around him. We were on a bit of a downward spiral out there but we pulled out of it."
While all of the tracks explore painfully personal struggles, "Never Too Late" was the hardest track for Gontier to write. Opening with a solitary guitar, which could easily signify loneliness, the track is instead the album's most optimistic song.
Adam admits, "It's the one that touches me the most when we play it live and when I listen to it now that the record's done, it still gives me shivers because it has so much to do with me. There's a sliver of hope in that song as well."
With lyrics like "Do you think there's no one like you / We are," "One X," the album's final song, is the one that Three Days Grace fans connect to the most. "It says you're not alone and there are lots of people out there like you," Gontier explains. "Having gone through these struggles, we are able to re-introduce ourselves and our music to our fans.It's time to let everyone else in on our lives over the last two years."
As we hear Gontier sing with his world-weary vocals at the end of the album, the band has developed a new sense of purpose; what started out as fear and pain has led to confidence and triumph.
"I need to figure out who's behind me," Adam sings in the album's final lines. "We are / We stand above the crowd."

Brown e i Three days grace sono mandati in uno studio a Boston, per preparare l’album di debutto del gruppo. Il gruppo ha completato il primo album intitolato Three days grace a Woodstock, New York, in una sistemazione lontana dalle distrazioni della città.

L’album Three days grace esce il 22 luglio 2003 (data in America), mentre “I hate everything about you” è già una hit sulle radio alternative del Canada.
Il gruppo ha fatto tour per i due anni successivi sia come supporter sia come headliners.
Ma dopo un po’ la vita ‘on the road’ ha fatto sentire - specialmente Adam – isolati e soli.
Di consequenza, questo tema – con il tema che in realtà non si è soli – è stato la base per il loro successivo album. Con un ritorno alle loro origini, scrivendo nella campagna dell’Ontario, il nuovo album, One-x esce nel giugno 2006 (in America…).
L’album, diventato numero 5 nella classifica Billboard top 200, segna il debutto del secondo chitarrista, Barry Stock.
I Three days grace hanno iniziato un tour per sostenere One-x nell’estate 2006 con gli Staind, gli Hoobastank e i Nickelback. Mentre “Animal I have become” diventa il numero uno della classifica Modern rock.

Album aperto e di confessione, One-x propone il frontman Adam Gontier che scava in un senso di totale solitudine che ironicamente deriva dallo stare costantemente circondato da altre persone.One-x è allo stesso tempo la storia della personale distruzione sulla strada (tour!)di Gontier e il racconto universale di sentirsi come un outsider.
“Dal fronte e dal retro i testi di One-x esplorano i problemi che avevo. Mi sentivo diverso (selezionato).Volevo essere normale e volevo solo qualcuno, qualcuno che mi aiutasse. A quel punto, ho finalmente capito che non importava quanto mi sentissi diverso, c’erano tantissimi altri la fuori come me. Ho capito ‘okay, non sono solo’.” – Adam Gontier
Parte del capire che non era solo arriva dal capire che i compagni della band si sentivano egualmente isolati, sgomentati dalla falsità della vita on the road.
“Essere in tour può essere strano a volte” – dice il bassista Brad Walst. “Tutte queste persone attorno a te sembra che ti conoscano, ma in realtà non ti conoscono e tu nemmeno conosci loro, ma vai avanti come se e conoscessi. E’ strano come ti senti ancora solo in una folla di persone. Infatti gli unici con cui potevamo relazionarci erano i veri fans.Loro sanno cosa succede nella tua testa perché sono gli unici che lo ascoltano nella tua musica.”
Dopo due anni di tour, la band stava arrivando alla conclusione di quello che ha provato. “L’intero processo ci ha sintonizzato su un fenomeno di isolamento urbano – essere in una grande città, dove le persone sono a poca distanza, ma ti sembrano chilometri distanti” dice il batterista Neil Sanderson. “Siamo abituati al contrario, siamo del rurale Ontario, dove sei fisicamente lontano, ma ti senti più vicino.”
Avendone abbastanza, la band fugge isolandosi ancora. Fatte le valige, uscendo dalla città e spostandosi in una casetta di campagna nell’Ontario, la band elimina tutte le distrazioni esterne per scrivere One-x. “Abbiamo scritto l’album fondamentalmente attorno ad un fuoco con le chitarre acustiche”, dice Walst. “Era tornare alle nostre origini”.
Quando la band emerge, ha tra le mani un forte, estremamente emotivo album.One-x abbonda di vocals nutriti da angoscia (!), battute heavy e ruvidi accordi. Sostenuto da una tuonante sessione ritmica di Neil Sanderson alla batteria e Brad Walst al basso, e da martellanti e insistenti riff di Barry Stock alla chitarra, One –x è una montagna russa (!) attraverso la psiche di Gontier. Intensamente sincero, Gontier non lascia niente nascosto;sembra che stia strappando pagine dal suo diario.
“Pain” vede Gontier testardamente attaccato ai vizi che lo feriscono, mentre lascia che la voce provi a guarirlo. I versi quasi melodici arrivano da “qualcuno che mi dice che c’è qualcosa che non va e devi fare qualcosa a riguardo”, dice Gontier, mentre il ritornello lo vede aggrappato al dolore.
“Animal I have become”, il primo singolo estratto da One-x, è la comprensione di Adam “che si deve cambiare e deve chiedere aiuto”. Con il basso che lo sostiene, Gontier supplica “Qualcuno ponga fine a questo incubo/non posso controllarmi”. E’ spaventoso anche l’inizio, quando si accorge dell’impatto del rivelare i suoi testi: “Cosa succede se puoi vedere/il mio lato più oscuro”.
“La strada senza dubbio ci a messo alla prova a volte”, dice Sanderson, echeggiando il sentimento di “Animal I have become”. “Dal mio punto di vista so che puoi quasi perdere il controllo la fuori e venire catturato in un momento. E’ solo lo stile di vita. So che Adam ha passato momenti in cui avrebbe fatto qualsiasi cosa per allontanarsi dagli stranieri attorno a lui. Eravamo su un pezzo di spirale che andava verso il basso la fuori, ma ne siamo usciti.”.
Mentre tutte le canzoni esplorano dolorosamente personali battaglie, “Never too late” è stata la più difficile da scrivere per Gontier. Cominciando con una solitaria chitarra, che può significare semplicemente solitudine, la canzone è invece la più ottimista dell’album.
Adam riconosce, “E’ quella che mi commuove di più quando la suoniamo ai concerti e quando la ascolta adesso che l’album è fatto, mi da ancora I brividi perchè mi riguarda molto. C’è un frammento di speranza in quella canzone.”
Con il testo “Pensi non ci sia nessuno come te/noi lo siamo”, “One-x”, l’ultima canzone dell’album, è quella con cui i fans dei Three days grace si relazionano di più. “Dice che non sei solo e che ci sono tante persone come te la fuori”, spiega Gontier. Avendo combattuto queste battaglie, siamo in grado di ripresentare noi e la nostra musica ai nostri fans. E’ ora di lasciar entrare gli altri nella nostra vita degli ultimi due anni”.
Come Gontier canta con una voce stanca del mondo alla fine dell’album, il gruppo ha un nuovo obbiettivo;quello che era cominciato come paura e dolore ha portato a fiducia e trionfo.
“Devo capire chi c’è dietro di me”, canta Adam nelle ultime battute dell’album. “Noi lo siamo/Noi stiamo al di sopra della folla”.
